We are pleased to be able to update you on the situation with GP appointments.

Government Guidance still states that all doctor appointments should be triaged by phone first and then patients seen face to face if clinically required, as we have been doing throughout the pandemic.  However we have made the decision to make available a proportion of appointments to be face to face which patients can book in advance for any symptoms or conditions unrelated to Covid-19.  

If you have respiratory symptoms, we do still need to initially assess this over the phone and the GP will then discuss with the patient whether a face to face appointment is required.

Appointments can be booked over the phone or online and as of 1/4/22, 25% of appointments are bookable online.

Wearing of face masks is still mandatory in NHS premises to protect both patients and staff

Shared Care Record
We wanted to let you know that we are finally connecting our systems to offer joined-up health and care records, which will enable better, safer care and treatment for all our patients.

As a GP, it is difficult to provide joined-up care with so many separate systems for handling patient information. These were not connected, meaning that you often had to repeat your story each time you received care at a different organisation, or with a different health professional. The Shared Care Record means up-to-date records will be immediately available to professionals caring for you as a patient, when you need direct care.

It will mean, for instance, a doctor in a hospital, or a paramedic who attends a 999 call will be able to confidentially access the same crucial information that we can at the Practice, such as details of any allergies and current medications, bringing potentially life-saving benefits.

Robust security measures are in place to protect your health information and all staff must follow the law on keeping your information confidential.

The Shared Care Record is not the same as the General Practice Data for Planning and Research Directions (GPDPR), which is a national NHS Digital initiative to use GP practice data for research and planning purposes.

The Shared Care Record is a local initiative to share information with organisations directly involved in your care to ensure that you receive prompt and appropriate treatment when you need it. For more information, please click on the above Image.

COVID-19 Spring Booster Update

New Barn Close Surgery has started the rollout of the Spring Booster. We are offering the vaccine to those who are eligible: People aged 75 years and over and those aged 12 years and over with a weakened immune system are being offered the spring booster. This spring booster is being offered as a precaution to those at extremely high risk, most of whom received their first booster around 6 months ago.

You will receive an invite from us via text message, where you will be able to book by following the link which will show the clinics available to you. If you do not have a mobile registered with us, we will call you to book in to one of our clinics once they are available. You will receive an invite from us around 6 months since your last dose of vaccine. If you have not yet received an invite, it may be because it has not been 6 months since your last dose.

You must have had your primary doses before being offered a Spring Booster. At Barn Close, we are offering the Pfizer vaccine. If you’ve recently had COVID, you will have to wait 28 days before being able to have your spring booster.

Long Covid

Most who have Covid will recover from their infection in under four weeks, some will have ongoing symptoms lasting up to twelve.

Some will experience symptoms that are not improving or last longer than twelve weeks. These can be felt in different ways affecting different parts of the body, for one it will be fatigue & poor concentration, for another breathlessness or chest pains.                      
If you are affected, please book an appointment with your GP to discuss your symptoms and arrange further steps.

Health Monitor Machine

New Barn Close Surgery now has a Health Monitor Machine in Reception; which measures your Blood Pressure, BMI, height and weight in 90 seconds. All patients are welcome to use the health monitor which is located directly opposite the entrance in reception.

Once you have used the Health Monitor, it will print a ticket with your results. Please fill in your name and date of birth on the ticket and return it to reception so a clinician can review your results.

New GP Changes

As we are sure most of you will know, Dr Neil Townshend has "hung up his stethoscope" and retired from New Barn Close Surgery and General Practice. Neil has been an exceptional leader at the practice and a very valued member of our team. He has held many roles both within the practice, the local medical community and wider organisations.

Over the last 18 months Neil has been our project manager in the development of the new surgery. Without his hard work and long hours, we may still be waiting for the new building. It is sad for him that he has not been able to enjoy the new building for as long as he had planned due to the 6 month delay in us moving in, but he has seen the building finally finished and has been able to work here for the last month.

We are pleased to announce that Dr Chantal Nyenyezi, who joined us in 2015 as a salaried GP, will become a new partner at the practice on 1st November 2021, joining Dr Emma Billings and Dr John Hughes.

We will all miss Neil, and we are sure our patients will miss him too. We wish him the very best in his retirement and thank him for all his years of service to the community and to us as a practice.

The GPs have made a decision not to deal with any medical queries or information requests for medical advice via email. This is because confidentiality cannot be guaranteed and there is no way of knowing when an email will be read.

If you need medical advice or if you need to give information to your GP, then please make an appointment to see your doctor.

If not it is not too late, please contact us to book an appointment!

Check the link below for information and to see whether you are eligible. If you are not eligible for an NHS vaccination then you can still book an appointment for a private vaccination. Enquire at reception.



Please park with utmost care and attention. Although the car park is a lot larger than the one at the old surgery, it is still just as busy.

The car park is a private area reserved for the use of staff and patients whilst attending the surgery. Space is limited so please remove your car immediately after leaving the surgery.

Online appointments can be booked through Patient access as well as ordering Prescriptions.

Patient Access connects you to local health services when you need them most. Book GP appointments, order repeat prescriptions and discover local health services for you or your family via your mobile or home computer
